The Bardiya National Park is situated in the far west Terai of Nepal adjoining the eastern bank of the Karnali river in the Bardiya district. Covering an area of 960 sq. km., it is the largest wilderness area of Nepal.
It extends from the Churia hills southward to the gentle slopes of the Bhabhar. It includes 839 species of flora,642 faunal species, 53 mammals,407 bird species. Wildlife and eco system in Bardiya National Park is not significantly different from that of Chitwan National Park; however, this one features black buck, hog deer, samber deer, wild boar, barasingha or swamp deer, rhesus macaque and the Gangetic dolphin. The Karnali and Babai rivers attract a large number of water species such as herons, kingfishers and wall creepers. A true paradise for wildlife and an excellent habitat for most of the endangered species, this national park was initially a royal hunting reserve. Only in 1988, it was declared a national park.
