Kanchenjunga means “Five Treasures of the Snow”, as it contains five peaks, four of them over 8,450 metres. Kanchenjunga located in the Taplejung district straddling the frontier between Nepal and India, is the third highest mountain in the world.
The conservation area that surrounds it extends into protected areas in Sikkim and Tibet. This region is primarily a territory for Snow Leopards, but these reclusive predators share the unbounded forests of place with the Himalayan Black Bear and the Assamese Macaque among others. Cascading waterfalls, lush vegetation and thousands of species of plants await those who take the long trail to Kanchenjunga Base Camp, the main route which has been described as ‘untrekked’.
Like its neighbouring region Makalu Barun, this region has to endure immense rain during monsoon season, which consequently make this place burst with life. Over 2000 different flowering plants have been recorded here. You’ll see some of the richest rhododendron forests in Nepal. This trek is considered as technical trek and is suitable for those who are moderately fit.
