Ladakh is a mountainous region that lies in the northwest Jammu and Kashmir in northern India. It is a land of high passes and is located in the Trans-Himalayan regions; it spans the Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges and the upper Indus river valley. The largest town in Ladakh is Leh, where the majority of people are Tibetan Buddhist and the rest are mostly Muslims. Ladakh is renowned for its beautiful mountains and its ancient culture.
The Indus river valley is the heartland of Ladakh. It stretches 9000 m from Kargil to 7672 m at Sanserkangeri in the Karakoram ranges. The flora and fauna in Ladakh is similar to that of central Asia. Birds from the warmer part of India migrate to this place during the summer.
