Trekking Permits and TIMS:
You do not require a trekking permit to trek in most parts of Nepal. However, there are some restricted areas where you must get a trekking permit (the authorization of the Government of Nepal) in order to visit them. Some permits are required in advance while some have to be taken on the spot. If one plans to trek in two different restricted areas, then two different permits are required.
Since 2008, a new trekking system called TIMS (Trekking Information Management System) has been implemented for trekking passes in all major trekking regions. This is to make sure that the authorities know if a trekker goes missing or need rescuing. If you’ve booked an organized tour, your trekking agency will organize the TIMS card for you (blue TIMS card, 10 US$).Independent trekkers can get their card (green TIMS card, 20 US$) from the Nepal Tourism Board offices in Kathmandu and Pokhara, or through the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN), which has offices in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Always remember to carry your passport and you TIMS card with you while traveling.
